Yesterday I installed a used set of 172s with BMW OEM TPM sensors and now the TPM Malfunction warning is on. I checked and rechecked the tire pressure and tried reseting the TPM system several times with no luck. Does anyone know a way to diagnose which sensor it may be? The warning was not present with my OEM 124s.

I searched, but could not find the answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I assumed you re-initialized per the instructions in your owners manual.

you need a bmw/scan tool to tell u which it is unless you want to replace al 4. Typically when changing wheels or tires you should change the sensors for 21 bucks each or whatever. They are finicky and get broken/bent when changin wheels and tires. I always change all 4 every 2 years when i put on new tires

Thanks for the info. Thats what I suspected. Who sells these sensors for 21 bucks? At that price, I might replace all four.

BTW the wheels I got came with tires, so I could not install new sensors without taking it to the tire shop.

Hey,

Did you ever figure out how to fix the issue?

I got the same issue by replacing the whole wheel set. Took it to the dealer, the shop took the tire apart and told me that the sensor is for a different model. I have the 2008 model, but I put the F10 wheels on them.

Interesting catch - the wheel-mounted TPMS for the F10's are different than the units specified for the earlier production date e60's. They are not interchangeable. Planned obsolescence

In my case it was a single sensor that was malfunctioning on my second set of wheels. I ended up swapping one wheel at a time with my original set of wheels to see which sensor was triggering the warning message. I did a TPM reset every time I installed another wheel on the car. After three attempts I found the culprit and ended up replacing just that sensor. The other three sensors are still ok.
