i have about 10k on my kumho ecsta tires, the rear ones (275-35-18)are already shagged even with a wear rating of 420! i live in the santa cruz mountains which have the curviest roads i've ever seen,(sicily may have some that are more curvy) and i'm sure that is a huge factor. most of the time when i replace my tires on the other cars the corners are worn off and the middle is still ok, but in this case the middle is gone too, its down to 2mm tread depth.

anyone have an experience with tire life with respect to brand/model. i read that the treadwear rating on tires is not always accurate as it is not benchmarked very well.

talked to the guy at the tireshop today and he said that 10-15k on the rears is about the best i'll ever get with my car.

tirerack has yokohama avids that have a fairly high wear rating of 560, wonder if they will last longer.

thanks

While I have no idea how old the run flats were that I had in the rear, I can tell you that due to the "camber" my right rear tires inside edge got chewed up and I can see the inside of the tire through a 1" hole... I will say the run flats allowed me to go 7 miles more before putting on the donut spare but wtf??! The angle of the rear tires in these cars did a number on it!.

That sounds like a very poor wear characteristic. Maybe your road surfaces are especially abrasive.

I have 14,000 miles on my current set of OEM Dunlop Run-Flats. It is the third set of Dunlops on the car with 44,000 total miles. They are beginning to show increased wear on the inner edges, but are no where near wearing out. I expect to get close to 20,000 miles on them.

I admit I have babied these tires in daily driving, but I have taken the car on two track days. The track has a smooth, new surface, and I didn't notice any drastic wear following the lapping days.

This is pretty common, here's a good read as to why with our cars (see negative camber 1.5~2.0 degrees):

One option you have is to flip the tire between the rear rims [for directional tires with symmetrical tread patterns]. Do this part way through the excessive wear to the inner blocks of the tire. This will effectively move what was the inside block to now be the outside block on the opposite side of the vehicle. Now when that same tire begins to wear on the insides, you will be wearing down the fresh tread that was previously the outer block. Unfortunately this does not work with tires that use an asymmetric tread pattern like the Continental D(S)W's.

I just replaced my rears at 32K with another set of Michelin pilot sport a/s on my 2008 550i sport. Fronts still have 20K . Great tire in all areas . I'm in Atlanta and drive hilly areas daily for 100 miles

My rear tires only last me 9-10K miles at most. The first set of OEM Conti's lasted about 9K miles. My Hankooks rears now are at 40% or less, with only 7K miles on them. And not a single burn-out since owning the car.

9-10k miles???! Crap... I am having all 4 brand new Conti Extreme Contact DWS's installed next week and do 100 miles per day... 6 months from now I will be buying rears again... wtf!

I will have 2 front runflats (one BRAND NEW and the other probably no more than a couple thousand miles on it) for sale... the size is 245/40/18 - Dunlop SP Sport 01 DSST RunOnFlat so PM me if interested. They should be off my car by the end of next week and I will take pictures to post.
