The sensors are mounted in the wheels -- you don't need to do anything if you just change tires but if you change wheels, you have to mount the sensors in the new wheels, which monacobmw didn't do, it seems...
This means that those of us who believe that the OEM 2007 wheels on the 530i (non-sport) are not too attractive are stuck in agony when we change over to the beautiful #166s (see below). I guess the solution is to pay for the darn sensors.

It's funny how a couple years ago, everyone complained that BMW used the wheel rotation to compute the tire pressure variances instead of a true sensor in the wheel.
Now they're using sensors in the wheel and people are complaining about it. Not sure I saw that one coming...

How do those sensors transmit data to the car? is it via RF? Are they stuck inside the wheel by adhesive or are they drilled and mounted in there like the valve stem.
I ask cuz thats how they are mounted on the Lexus IS... and I dont like the fact you have to drill aftermarket new rims to accomodate the sensors.
I hope new rims dont have 2 holes... else it'll be a problem for me buying new #166s

They are part of the valve stem. Corvettes have had them for quite a while. IMPORTANT: Before breaking the bead on a wheel with a sensor, you have unscrew the nut on the valve stem and push the stem into the wheel or else the sensor gets damaged.

I believe that there is a federal Law in the US mandating Tire Pressure Monitoring. Therefore they would not be able to turn it off legally.
The NHTSA rule requires automakers to install systems by the 2008 model year.

I hear that each sensor is only about $40. For me it is removing the tires that were just high speed balanced and doing it again (I had them take a lot of time to get a perfect balance). I will wait until I change the tires again.

The sensor light does two things. First, at start up (everytime), the yellow malfunction light on your dash blinks for about three minutes. Then, it goes to a steady yellow light. It is like those old cars that used to flash the "check engine" light.
Then, the console screen for the I-Drive shows a TMP Malfunction message at the bottom (at start up and while driving).

show up on the I-Drive screen! Maybe it's because the coffee can leaks.Seriously, my 5er is in the dealer shop now to fix a TPM malfunction error message. Reading the searched posts was interesting and I am anxious to see my problems' fix.
BTW, I never did figure out to use the front pressure or the rear in the coffee can.
