Hi Friends:
How do the 5-Series tire-pressure monitors work? I just realized that, having looked at my old wheels after they were removed and having looked at my new wheels before they were installed, I have no idea how the monitors work.

I don't think the E60 has direct tire pressure monitors, yet. I recall reading that it will come (standard or option?) starting in March 2006.
I believe our current cars "monitor" tire inflation indirectly using the ABS sensors.

It uses ABS sensor data to monitor differences in wheel spinning speed. If wheels spin at different speed (faster) it is because one tire has less pressure than the other.
The only drawback is that is that if all wheels run flat you will not be alerted. But i can live with that

The tire pressure monitors "monitor" the tires by detecting slight differentials in rotation, which would be characteristic of a change in circumference due to a slow or sudden loss of pressure in a tire as compared to the others. There aren't any sensors or detectors; it just senses rotational differences. Simple, but effective.

What does the "old chestnut returns" mean? I thought I had heard everything. I see sort of: there were two similar posts. Where does the expression come from, and what exactly does it refer to?

Yup, but you'll ruin the tyre and possibly the rim!!!

In this post, FTM, earlier today, I said 'This old chestnut'
When you asked again, thus 'The chestnut returns'!
For a description see here, it fits very well! OldChestnut!
