Hey guys i did a search and was not able to find anything regarding my problem.

I have a 2004 545i with close to 100k miles , recethly I noticed a small rattling noise coming from the area of the timming chain. My first guess was a timming chain tensioner. The noise is not too loud sounds like a little metal rattling. I notice it gets louder once the car is in gear once I put it back on neutral its not that loud. I dont have any power loss or feel the car weird except for that noise.

Any guidance will be nice

Thanks

Off topic but does the E60 have a timing chain? Never knew that it did?

all OHV engines have either timing chains or timing belts.

On another car I had a bad guide and tensioner. The guide sounded like what your saying but only on cold starts, however the tensioner made a whining noise so I dont think that could be it

It could be your water pump. It has a bearing in it that when it wears in creates a click-clack sound. My Indy BMW guy told me this when I took my car in a couple of months ago and he took a stethoscope and let me hear the noise on the pump. If it's not that it could also be your timing chain guides in which case you need to get it replaced ASAP because it leads to bigger problems.

Possible Altenator bearing on it's way out, problem is they way the sound travels through these engine, you could change everything trying to find it, best this to do is go to a garage, most have stethoscopes and least will help pin point the noise rather than guessing
