Ticking after replacing valve stem seals
I've got a 2005 545i. I just finished replacing the valve stem seals. The car started right up and there wasn't any noticeable problems while running accept there is a ticking noise coming from the driver side valve cover, front cylinder. The very first time I started the car, the noise wasn't there and let it run for about a minute then shut it down. I let it sit for about another minute then started it again. That's when the noise appeared. I only let it run for about a minute when I noticed the noise then shut it down right away. The ticking isn't really loud but I know that it shouldn't be there. Could it be that oil needs to circulate after the job? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am pretty new to owning an 04 545i so I do not know everything about them but from previous cars (Hondas and Subies) that I have seen the same symptoms it seemed to be that the noise was caused by a valve that needed adjusting. They were either too loose or too tight. I have no idea how you adjust the valves on a 545i but I'd imagine your problem is there

Thanks, I'll look into that. If someone else could add to this, could replacing the valve stem seals cause the need to adjust the valves? If so, how would I adjust them?

I just saw that because these have hydraulic lifters, there is no need to adjust the valves because they self-adjust. Someone confirm?

I do almost all Kind of repares myself exept balancing tires and paint work but when I replaced mine I let the profetional do it as it needed timing chain adjustment and I do not wanted to mess with it. I remember I had the ignation on for more than 3minuts on without starting the car to let the velvetroncs selfedjust. Than I started the car and there was ticklish sound for a while but after running it for 30 minuts it cleard and there was no ticklish sound. Did you do the job yourself, have you adjusted the timing chains?

I did the job myself but I used the AGA N62 tool so I didn't have to remove the cams or timing chain. The only things I had to remove were the rocker arms, valve springs, valve keepers, and vale stem seal. I'll try leaving the ignition on then letting it run like you did. Thanks.

The noise could be the hydraulic lifters. They are oil filled with an internal spring. If they completely drained of the oil they will tick until they get refilled with oil. If you are sure it is a lifter sound, I'd just drive it and see how it sounds after a good drive.

Thanks for the help everyone. I decided to remove the cover again to check everything out. Turns out that the spring on the front intake rocker arm had popped off. Luckily nothing bad happened. I just reset it and it runs great now.
