Very much depends on the condition. I have spent <1000/year and done quite a bit of DIY preventative maintenance.
Brakes and battery are the big things for all cars. Other things like rubber sealing etc. can be replaced. I have replaced the fuel filter (with help from other forum members) and some other filters also. Mostly getting Walnut Shell cleaning soon.
Turbos don't fail before 100-120K.

Expect to spend on maintenance:
At least $700 for a set of tires depending on your preference
At least $500 for brake rotors and pads (more if you buy OEM)
At least $100 for steering, tranny, brake, or radiator fluid flush
At least $75 for an oil change (much more at a dealer)
At least $50 for spark plugs (plus labor for someone to replace them)
At least $50 for air filters (highly recommend you read the DIY for replacing them)
Most of these can be DIY if you have the tools and space.
REPAIRS are a different story.

The biggest thing i have heard is to follow preventive maintenance. Click here for a link to BAVAUTO suggestion schedule. Pages 4 and 5 seem to have the bulk of what we need. Anyways, if you are mechanically inclined and have the tools, you won't be spending that much on mainatance. DO NOT USE the dealer...try and find a indy that knows BMWs. Good luck and there is a ton of info on here that can help you save money as well!

i just had some preventive maintenance done by an indy shop. this included front differential fluid change, transfer case fluid change, engine oil/filter change, and belts, hoses, etc. inspection done. i wanted the rear differential fluid changed also, but the mechanic recommended it not being done until 60k miles (i now have 40xxx on my '08 535) and will have transmission serviced (auto) probably then as well. the only other maintenance i have done beside oil/filter changes is tires and front end alignment. and as another poster stated, this is separate from any repairs performed.
