Quoted from the NOV 07 edition of Bimmer, who did a story on a Hartage 335i:

"A drive in a stock 335i starts off with promise, revealing good low-end torque and a punch mid-range. But just when you think the car is really cooking with gas, the power starts to tail off around 5,500 rpm, leaving the enthusiast driver unfulfilled.

The remapped ECU in the Hartage 335i changes that picture altogether. With no other changes apart from software and Bird's prototype rear exhaust silencers, power goes up from a Euro-spec 306 bhp at 5,800 rpm to to 381 bhp at 6,000 rpm, while torque increases from 289 lb-ft between 1,300 and 5,000 rpm to 325 lb-ft between 1,300 and 5,200 rpm.

The first time we had the chance to open the Hartage car's taps fully on a long straight, we could tell that power and torque had been enhanced across the board. But the real difference is apparent over 5,000 rpm, when the motor seems to inhale with even bigger lungs and charges on towards 6,800 rpm with a fervor alien to the stock motor. Once you have experienced this dramatic change to the power delivery, you get the impression that BMW deliberately restricted the turbocharged N54's fuel and spark at high revs, and that Hartage has merely unleashed its latent potential."

No mention of increasing boost pressure from the turbos.

I've always believed BMW was selling short the true capable output of this motor. Now we are starting to see the proof.

I'd like to see the results without a remap but with the exhaust, and then with the remap but without the exhaust. At the moment it's not really clear which one is providing the bulk of the increase, or whether one without the other is any good. But still, yes, for *35i owners, it's good news!

The exhaust upgrade was only the silencer/muffler, which would give it a different sound. Power gains from this would be minimal compared to what other exhaust mods (headers, high flow cats) would do.

Both the three liter L6 double-turbo engines (d and i) "will see the light" what comes to boosting.

It will be interesting to see which will be more powerful and faster...

+1 Exhaust isn't going to net you much gain (unless you were to start from the headers back and install high flow cats etc.) Typically the muffer exchange is strictly for sound enhancement.

Nice post...thanks fo the information and it certainly is nice to know that we are starting to see options to open up the 535i. BMW is by no means the only manufacturer who "keeps the engines a bit corked" they all do it...less warranty claims and sometimes a strategy so they can gradually increase the engines output over a period of years...keeps the new models exciting to know the hp/torque has been increased from year to year. For instance the 5.4L SC in the GT500 is rated for up to 700+ hp (on the stock internals) while coming with a conservative 500hp. The new GT500 KR edition coming out this year has a 50 - 60hp increase just by coming with a less restrictive intake and a pully (i.e., using Ford's own FRPP parts that are available to us now)....while I don't know the 4.8L engine of the 550i very well...I'd assume it should easily handle 400 - 430hp without sacrificing reliability/durability.

It might. I'm sure if it could the aftermarket shops would be advertising the crap out of it......not good for BMW since its starting to market the new M3
