Yep, thats the rule in our home. Had to beg my wife to remember not to leave her sunglasses or even the LV sunglass case in sight. I told her that a thief walks past expensive cars looking for those with good stuff to steal. If they cant see it, they rather not take the time and effort on a guess but if they see it, then they know its for sure and worth the effort. The more stuff they see, the better target your car becomes.

The only other way to help avoid it, is park your car in a very open spots where no one is parked right up around you. That way they cant hide between cars or duck down when someone is passing by.

But then again, living in Irvine has it's advantages since the only harassment you get are from the police, plus there are still people there that leave their front doors unlocked..

Just my experience living in Irvine for 5 years.

The thing is theives are focusing on stealing your airbags and headlights. Everything else is a bonus.

redeyejedi, very true, Irvine is not the best test case for vandalism, let alone any crime, which is exactly why the cops are a little aggressive here, they have nothing else to do by comparison.

Actually I was born, raised in Kansas City and had a car broken into, wiped out my entire stereo system and ever since then I leave in the stock system, just make sure I get Premium sound so its at least pretty good and we no longer leave items on the seat or console.

when my car was targeted, they had shot out the side window with a bb gun from a distance. Obviously so they could see if an alarm went off or if anyone heard the glass break. When it was clear, they then open the door and got everything. This was right in front of my work in a very public place and somehow they got a stereo head unit, and rear deck speakers along with a subwoofer. Rear deck speakers were built into the hatch cargo cover so they just took the whole thing. Just goes to show, if they want something frrom your car, they will try anything so best to reduce their options as much as possible.

Hello All,

Just wanted to let you guys know to be careful leaving an ipod inside the car or anything for that matter. A thief broke into my car and stole my Ipod, a flip camera and a few other things. But what I wanted to warn everyone about was the lacking design of the hood lock. The drivers side side of my hood was popped open very easily. Under the hood there are two hinged locks one on the drivers side and one on the passengers side. The locking mechanism could be easily defeated by pulling on the cable attached (it runs above the wheel well under the hood black color). Basically they pry up the hood a little bit and pull on the cable and wala your hood pops open and no alarm is activated. Once open they can disable the alarm and get your doors open and steal everything without you even knowing.
I installed video cameras around the perimeter of my home with one on the driveway, and actually caught some kids trying to break into my wife's car. I saw thm on the television monitor while I was leaning up that night after dinner and confronted them, haven't seen them since. You may want to consider having it done. If you are a DIY guy, it will cost you under $1,000 for good product or around $1800 professionally installed.

Indeed Irvine is not an ideal example, but of course I do get your point regardless. No matter what car you drive it's not safe to leave worthwhile possessions within sight of potential thieves. It's just unfortunate that if you drive a nicer car people will assume you have nicer things to steal as well, because more than likely it's true.

Did you guys know that Irvine police will actually escort bums out of the city and drop them off at neighboring cities? Also the roads in Irvine were specifically designed to be difficult to navigate unless you are familiar with the area, so it would be harder for thieves to get away if they don't know their way. That is why there are soo many culdesacs and long roads, though this may be heresay. I have seen bums dropped off by patrol cars, as well as 3 patrol cars pulling over an old, caucasion lady in an older Toyota Corolla.. tax payer's dollars hard at work my friends.

I digress..

Anyways be smart everyone and hide your valuables, because if you liked it enough to buy it, I'm sure someone else wouldn't mind having it too!

You are right about the bums/beggers. I told my wife if you ever see someone on a corner with their sign asking for money, food, etc, come back in 5 minutes and they will be gone. Irvine absolutely doesnt allow it. So first they check everything to see if the person has a warrant or anything suspicious and if not, they escort them along out of the city.

By the way, this past summer in Irvine there was a ring of theives targeting the Fitness Clubs. LA Fitness mostly. They were popping trunks and stealing items from glove boxes and consoles. Police said this crime ring started in Long Beach and they set up a sting to catch them, which eventually happened. The idea was people go into the gym to work out and leave valuables, like watches, wallets, etc in their cars so the thieves watch a person that drives in with a MB, BMW, Lexus, etc and pays attention to them as much as possible. Once they go inside, the thieves hit the car and within a few minutes have looted everything of valuve from the car, even smaller items like CDs,

^ Along with that trail of thought, a relative of mine in the SF area went to the gym. Someone broke into her car and stole her garage clicker and since she had her registration in the car, they also got her home address. Another relative was home and heard the garage door open, each time closing it thinking it was a glitch of some sort. On the 3rd time the potential thief was in the garage by the time my relative went to close the garage door again. Luckily she ran to the street screaming which made the guy run off.

Be VERY careful of what you leave in your car.
