The dreaded increased emissions warning came on and my ac was taking about 4 minutes for the compressor to kick on. I am 1 month out of warranty and have 44k miles. I thought this would be a good chance to test my aftermarket warranty which cost me $2400. I did go to Autozone to get the error read...came back with the thermostat issue. So here's what the dealership found:

1. Valve in compressor was faulty...they replaced the compressor..warranty covered..$2000
2. replaced thermostat...covered under warranty..$300
3. Found a 'coolant hose leak'....not covered by warranty..$155

So I'm already even with the warranty! Lesson to all near the end of their factory warranty or buying a used bimmer...GET A EXTENDED WARRANTY!!

Glad you got that cover.

The option would be finding a good BMW mechanic who can do the work for less $$.

I'm still trying to find a good indy mechanic, but since I have the warranty I'm going to the dealership.

Totally agree 100%. Our cars are fairly reliable with proper maintenance, but the few times that they break tend to be expensive, especially at the dealer. I just did a ton of preventive cooling system replacement on my E46 for under $1600. I casually asked my dealer what it would cost to replace the same things at his dealership and he replied "somewhere around three grand." Wow!! that's quite a difference. I advise people with no warranty to look up the local chapter of the BMW club on the web and find independent shops who employ BMW trained technicians.
