I've noticed the same problem. If you blip the accelerator, the engine just doesn't rev at all - you have to hold it maybe for 1 second before it starts to rev. I end up blipping 2x.

I really have not had much of a problem, but I am not comparing a lot of other cars.? The CDV is a definate must.

Also, throttle response has been significantly improved over the last year.

If you where driving a 2004, I would look at the S/W version.? I have noticed a huge difference in throttle response, which has helped my shifts, after having the s/w upgraded.? My previous s/w upgrade was 11/04 for enabling bluetooth.? Current s/w is 18.x

The old soft could very well be the problem as the dealer said it was beginning of the 2004 car. It'd be hard to go back and look at the sw version, it'd be easier to test drive more recent 545i. BTW, do 2005 models all have updated soft? Also, what about the autos on 545i? Does it adequately represent the car? The 530xi auto I drove left indeed a nice impression as far as the tranny. I think MT is more fun to have on 545i but auto
is an option.

Thanks for the link. It sheds a little more light on this topic for me.

By the way, where did you get your modified CDV installed in L.A. or did you do it yourself?

the only way i can keep smooth shifts is by shifting slowly, around 4K RPM from 1 to 2 ... and NOT letting off the gas all the way, as well as keepingt he clutch pressed a little. .. its weird. never had such a funky shifting car.

as well as the clutch chatter issue ... if i let the clutch out all the way pretty quickly .. it chatters liek crazy ... they adjusted something last visit .. and it was fine for about 150 miles.

My 06 530i behaves similarly, although I -do- let off the gas and I also operate the clutch in a very binary fashion. I've found either uber-lazy shifting is probably the easiest to do smoothly. I've found that trailing with the throttle just a hair longer than you think you should be when depressing the clutch makes the transition a bit smoother. I have no trouble when I'm driving it hard. I guess the car is biased to that kind of driving. I have figured out that at least for me, when I'm following cars in traffic, or pulling out from a light or something, I can't really gauge how quickly I can pull out, which is the biggest contributor to the problem. If I'm not worried about how fast I can pull out (if I'm first in line), then there's no issue.

You can get it installed by any mechanic - it is not a difficult job. And, as long as they clamp the hydraulic hose, you don't need to bleed the clutch - which is the reason I had someone else do it. Zechhausen gives very detailed info and the total job is less than an hour, unless you are trying to do it laying on your back. I would go to an independent BMW mechanic as they are more familiar with the cars.

I think it is very nice and a grand showing of restraint, that none of us SMG guys have chimed in yet.

I thought I wanted the manual. The SMG is sounding better and better. Is the manual really that bad? What's up with this? Maybe that's why they are delaying the manual for the 550i!? :'(

Nah this isnt the reason for the delay of the manual... all bmws are like this... at least the ones with more HP.

SMG IS better... just get it!

Hey guys, stay away. The 6spd threads are rare and we want to enjoy them.

With no CDV and the latest software, CIP 18. (I felt more silk with CIP 16) the only tme I have problems shifting is when the engine is cold. Revs drop far faster when you lay off the thottle. A warm engine, no problem past 2nd gear, both up and down. 1 to 2 is still a challenge, but that is to be expected with this engine and the torque on the clutch in 1st.
