hmmnn .... i knew it wasn't me! eventhough i took a 9month shifting break ... with the auto trans

"During normal, sedate driving, the shift from first into second gear is often jerky, leading passengers to question your skill at driving manual equipped cars. As the driver, you can see your passengers' heads bobbing back and forth during every shift! Yes, in their minds, they are laughing at you. "

if i could just the balls together to work on the hyrdaulic clutch ... if it weren't for bleeding the system i'd do it.

the only way i can keep smooth shifts is by shifting slowly, around 4K RPM from 1 to 2 ... and NOT letting off the gas all the way, as well as keepingt he clutch pressed a little. .. its weird. never had such a funky shifting car.

as well as the clutch chatter issue ... if i let the clutch out all the way pretty quickly .. it chatters liek crazy ... they adjusted something last visit .. and it was fine for about 150 miles.

I've been complaining about this from the very beginning. The engine just does not give you revs when you try to rev-match. Thankfully you get use to it after a while, but jumping into another car makes one appreciate shifting much more.

Though I can now rev match most gears fine, say 6th to 4th, or 6th to 3rd, I still have difficulty heel and toeing smoothly. Perhaps it's how the pedals are set up, coupled with the non eagerness to rev, but usually the only heel and toeing I can pull off smoothly on a regular basis is when I'm on the brakes hard and want to go into 2nd. When I'm on the brakes a fair amount, I find I can get on the throttle a good deal to get the revs up. It's either that, or learn to articulate one's foot a greater deal than in other cars.

Throw me in another car however, which is a 350z at the moment, and I can heel and toe with a fair amount of precision all day.

Oh, just so it's known, I still have the CDV in the car.

I ordered a modified CDV about a year and half a go, but never got around to getting it installed.

wow, reading all the responses I don't understand what BMW was thinking when they designed the shifts on this car . I don't see any advantage whatsoever in the way this shifting works (although upshifts is less of a problem) now but the consequenses are bad enough, from drivers' dissatisfaction to worned synchros. Is it a problem with new 3-series as well?

I really have not had much of a problem, but I am not comparing a lot of other cars. The CDV is a definate must.

Also, throttle response has been significantly improved over the last year.

If you where driving a 2004, I would look at the S/W version. I have noticed a huge difference in throttle response, which has helped my shifts, after having the s/w upgraded. My previous s/w upgrade was 11/04 for enabling bluetooth. Current s/w is 18.x

Can anybody reccommend a place in suburban Philadelphia to install a modified CDV in my E60? Also, if you can provide me with an idea of what it would cost to have it done in addition to the time that I should anticipate the job to take it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jordan
