Interesting things is saw today
For the guys that know the E60 BUS systems
Asof September for the E60
1) No more MPM (Micro power module )
2) New Gateway Module
3) No more Byteflight ( Interesting since BMW developed it)
4) No more SGM
Dont know exactly how the functions are now going to be controlled
Basically
MPM switches on and off the power too specific things like the Idrive system ect ect
The new Gateway module should take over the functions of the othr modules removed
Byteflight is a special bus system for the cars Inteligent safety systems
SGM is the safety and gateway module that helps control a number of functions
They are just cleaning up the design of te system and making it more efficient
Thats like saying Henry Ford should have built his first cars just like the E60
Technology keeps moving forward, the first complete E60 for BMW use were built in 2001, thats 4 years ago which is a LONG time in computer evolution

Yep. Constant refinement is normal. Combining functions of different modules into one is most likely going to make the car more reliable, less buggy, etc. which is a good thing...
I don't agree with you. One thing is the consumer oriented electronic, another matter is electronic for industrial applications. ANY industrial application is designed to live at least ten years and many industrial electronic products are still now based to very old, very reliable technolgy and products dating back from early nineties or late eighties.
In my opinion BMW decided to redesign the network system NOT because new, better products are now available but because a better lay-out is deemed desirable. Most probably, the original one was not totally satisfactory.
