my car lost its sterring and had a nasty rubber burning smell when the air con is on only.. it went into bmw and they said it was the damper on 1 of the pully what the belt goes round ect... i had to pay the excess of ?250 as thats what my extended warrenty is.... just want to make sure that the part they replaced wasnt cheap ect as when i picked it up and payed they seemed strange and didnt tell me much they also didnt give me an invoice for the work?...

 

I imagine its the main vibration damper on the crankshaft.
You can see it if you look down into the engine bay, just behind the cooling fan.
It has a couple of belts coming off it.

Seen new ones on ebay for ?160 if that helps.
