My Ride: My ex-ride: EU '08 LCI 520dA. Space Grey, Sport Seats in Black Leather/Fabric Anthracite, Sport Steering Wheel, A/C with Extended Features, Hi-Fi Speakers, Cup Holders, Cruise with Braking function, Folding Rear Seats, Xenons, Park Distance Control.

BMW will introduce in the new M54 3 litre twin-turbo six-in-line the new Direct Injection
that BMW calls High Precision Injection (HPI).

Together with VALVETRONIC and a 200 bar injectionpressure with Piezo sprayers the engine
will give more power thru out the whole rpm margin.

Also gas will be saved, up 10 %.

Do the above, the new M54B35 engine will be as strong as the curret 4 litre V8 but weighs
70 kg (140 puonds) less.
Also the twin-turbo will give its best torque (400 Nm) from 1300 to 5000 rpm.

A new intelligent electrical watherpump will also save gas (about 2 %).
The pump works only when needed and uses then only 200 W(atts).

A intelligent batterysensor, IBS, will see over that a battery always has enough juice
to start the engine.
It will turn off as much electrical devicesas needed if the battery is low.

One of the new innovations is also the IAC, Intelligent Alternator Control.
The generator works only when thruttle is not activated and it functuions as a
BER, Brake Energy Regeneration.
This save gas about 3 %.
The system will be soon introduced on new BMW's.

A new automatic 6 gear gearbox will also soon be on the market.
It has a new hydraulic momentum converter that saves gas 3 % and diesel 6 %.
It works faster (0,1 milliseconds) and is less enegry consuming.

thx for posting this interesting info. We have seen 'ED' in IAA 2005 in a X3 and the idea was awesome.

But now they say bi-turbo so def. will be even more juice and less consumption, sounds like diesel

All I know is for sure is that the new M54 (sixinline) engine family is starting with
the M54B35 (E92).
I guess the new engies will come the to E60 facelift in Sept '07.

The watherpump system is probably on that engine too and maybe even the genrator
and the new electrical system.

But this timetable is not fact, only my quess.

Yes what comes to fuel efficency and torque, but
Due to high pressure of DI, you'll hear ticking noise in the cabin. Not knocking sound like diesel
Even quiet Lexus cabin still cannot filter this ticking noise from its DI engine. This might be really annoys me to death, but it might sound more lovely on BMW

That's allready standard on the E60 from day one of its production.
