That "big luxury sedan" would put a Miata to shame on a track -- period...

How many laps do you think I can do before the brakes perfomance diminishes?
your brake pedal will probably start to feel softer after one or two 20minute sessions. flush the brake fluid before that day. remember do not use the parking/hand brake when you park your car in between sessions. the brakes need to cool down so just find a level surface to park.

depends on what determines how much fun you have at the track. If tossing 4k lbs around turns is fun for you, by all means, enjoy tracking the E60!

The potential for spinning out, or worse, crashing at the track, makes tracking the E60 a poor choice IMO. If youre out there to just drive with some aggression and get some high speed runs, that can be fun and safe...but not rewarding like ripping up a course in a more track oriented car.

You forget to realize these cars are built for more than daily drivers. I just did a skip barber driving school and even in a 330i there is just no way you are going to spin out with traction control on. We took an M3 as well out onto a track and I'll tell you that you can whip that wheel at 50mph as hard as you can and on dry pavement there is no way you are spinning out, it will hold that turn.

I learned that you can stomp on your brakes as hard as you can before every turn, hit the apex's hard, and these cars are no where near their limits.

I plan on tracking my 550 as well.

The purpose of tracking it is not to reach the limits of the car. One must definitely avoid the temptation of pushing the envelope on track days such as this. I'm not worried about the car but more so about the driver's skill As a friend has often reminded me "don't cofuse ambition and ability" The track days that I would only consider would be one that was organized privately and based on what has been proposed, there'll only be 10-12 cars for the whole day...so lots of room to be on yer own

At the moment, for a 550i on a track like this, I'd say start of the day with 10 laps at 50% just to get into the groove. Then 5-6 laps at 70%, then spend the rest of the day at 80% for 5-6 laps each round and let the brakes cool down in between for 15 mins or so. I wonder if that'll be enough time for a cool down?

I agree that a 550i shouldn't be a regular track car. My biggest concern that after a few track days the car will loose a lot of it's luxury aspects and rattles and creaks will appear like mushrooms. Actually thinking of an Evo IX for a fun car that I can track regularly....

If you want a fun track car go for a Caterham 7 and enjoy hunting down cars with lots more BHP!
