I just had my car serviced on the 14/03/2012 and was told i had an oil leak. They investigated the leak which cost me £44.50 to be told that the leak was from the inlet manifold swirl flap seals to which they say i must have a whole new inlet manifold at a cost of £666.66 fitted. The car has only done 41506 miles and needs a new manifold? Why cant just the seals be changed? I have also looked into the matter on the internet and found it was a common problem but my cars a 2007 model.
Also can anyone tell me where or how to fine my engine type and number?

Just get them removed altogether like everyone else. Even the later models have reported Swirl flap failures.
I had mine removed by a BMW Independant for £168 all in.
If you have time, a decent DIY set of tools and space, the blanks are about £8 each and can be done in an afternoon.
