i noticed when i was driving a bmw loaner car the other day, when i went to tilt the sunroof, the sunshade automatically opened a few inches. my 2006 530i has never done this though. i remember when i had a 3-series, it used to pull back the sunshade upon tilt. the loaner car was a 3-series also. is my sunshade supposed to open automatically when i tilt the sunroof? if so, then what could be wrong? thanks.

Same here. Opens about 4 inches.

gcvt, i am not exactly sure what you are trying to imply but it may be along these lines... the dealer i bought all of my cars from said that people are always trying to force the sun shade open and/or closed when the sun roof is in the tilt position and in turn break the plastic mechanism that operates the sun shade automatically. i'm kind of thinking that's exactly what happened as i am not the original owner.

I just meant that I didn't know it was supposed to do this so I went and tested mine and it doesn't work on my car. I'll have to ask my SA about this before my warranty expires in July. I bought my car used so...

If the sunshade DIDN'T open, how could the car be ventilated through the sunroof in the firstplace?

Good point Puck. Wonder why BMW doesn't put vents into the sliding shade like Mercedes. I don't think Mercedes actually patent that idea anyway.

yeah i got that much. we're on the same page.

i am strongly believing some plastic piece got busted by the original owner. i was looking on realoem diagrams and can't really see much there. i have lots of experience with sunroofs from messing around with my older bimmer. they're not that difficult to fix actually.
