With the pathetic UK attempt at winter (at least in the South West) now receeding into the distance, it is time for the summer shoes.

Had Goodyear GS-D3's last summer (225/50/17) and really didn't notice a huge difference in handling etc. when I put my winter conti's on.

Today put 245/45/17 PS2's on.

Big difference from the winters. Much sharper handling and turn in, much more like the sharpness of the original Bridgestone RFT's but without the hardness and tramlining.

To anyone thinking of the Goodyear GD-D3's, they are good tyres, but the PS2's are way out there.

The USA Upper Midwest is in the middle of a major snowstorm, so unfortunately we'll be keeping our winter shoes on for a while longer :'(

Isn't the logic also related to the temperature outside? I thought that winters were better in 45 degrees and below.

That may be true in theory but from my experience summer tires perform much better than snows on dry surfaces regardless the temperature. Even sportier snows like Dunlop M3 are too soft to be driven hard. Freezing rain or snow is a different situation. BTW, this year I decided against using snow tires and was able to enjoy my car through the winter.

Yes it is, the Michelin website gives some good data on this and has taken to refering to 'cold weather tyres'.

http://www.michelin.co.uk/uk/front/affich....;codeRubrique=1

In my part of the UK, Dec to Feb has an average of 5-7c normally.

This year it has been closer to 10c.

Even in a normal year March average temps go up to 9c, this year it is more likely to be 10-11c.

Daytime temps at the moment are 12c and rising, so well out of the ranhe for winter tyres.

Looks like we were a month apart at dismissining winter.

No update on your Alps trip then. I would've hoped you would be extolling the virtues of your winter tyres in that context.

Is there normally not a last burst of winter at the end march / early april? This is typically the case in Germany (Frankfurt) region. Not so in the UK?

I head off skiing to Austria mid-March every year, so I always wait until after that anyway. Can't wait to get those summer shoes back on though...!
