OK I agree turning it off after you press P makes sense if you have STEP, but what about the folks with manual transmission? BMW probably doesn't want to put extra work into electronics that will work differently on different transmissions; STEP owners won't want to pay extra for "Steptronic PDC".

Adding that feature to step owners would likely be a little extra code in the car's software that shouldn't change the cost. There already is plenty of "steptronic specific" program code on automatic cars (like shifting into park when a door is opened without the brake pedal being depressed) so it still makes sense to add this type of thing to make the car more refined and "complete."
