As with every technology, if you are too lazy to press a button, then the problem is not with that technology.

PDC has saved other pedestrians from being run over by me, so that's a good thing.

It's not really about being lazy and bothering to pressing a button or not..

Just saying that.. as with every technology, there's always room for improvements and adjustments.

Why press a button when you really don't have to?

.. PDC would be a more convenient and smart technology if it turned off automatically when I have finished parking i.e. put my gear to P.

I agree that in the world of software, etc., it doesn't make too much sense to keep the PDC on after shifting into park. It's not about being lazy, it's about the software being more refined and elegant.

Also, I've never experienced PDC turning itself off after a set period of time -- if it does, I've never waited long enough before pushing the button myself!

That's true. I don't understand your point???
No point, just a fact I discovered about PDC. It was never design to for curb rash prevention.

Yeah, TMQ, why can't BMW incorporate the Jedi mind trick into the car's functions. Nobody has time or energy to be reaching and pressing buttons. Who do they think we are, Stretch Armstrong?!?

It doesn't. If you just sit there with it on, it's gonna stay on. It goes off automatically after you've exceeded 15MPH or so in a forward gear.

Oh, OK. You must be talking about parallel parking. I haven't parallel parked in years.

Exactly -- it clearly turns itself off at speed but if it turns itself off while in park, I've never witnessed it (and remain skeptical that it even does...)

And I might be wrong, but I think it will also automatically come on if you creep forward slowly enough. It has happened with me a couple times. And I'm pretty sure that the system is actually always active. It actually alarmed one time on the freeway when somebody came flying up behind me too fast and started tailgating me. It beeped a couple times then went back off. Might've been a glitch, though.

That must be malfunction.

OK I agree turning it off after you press P makes sense if you have STEP, but what about the folks with manual transmission? BMW probably doesn't want to put extra work into electronics that will work differently on different transmissions; STEP owners won't want to pay extra for "Steptronic PDC".
