Strange light behaviour in boot and number plate bulbs

Hi all.
Hoping you can give me some info on whether this is normal or not. I have a E60 530d Saloon (2003).
When I first open the boot (tailgate) a little bit, I have noticed that the light in the boot comes on nice and bright but once I open the tailgate up fully, the light goes a little dim but does remain on.
Likewise I have also noticed that the number plate lights also do exactly the same so they must be on the same circuit....
So to summerise:
Tailgate open fully: Boot and numberplate Lights dim
Tailgate open halfway or less: Boot and numberplate Lights bright
Is this normal? If not, What could be causing this? Best fix?
Regards in advance,
Richard

As they aren't on the same circuit, I would definitely check out any common earth return on the boot lid to the body - a breakage in the wire will show at "full stretch" but connect again with the boot lid closed.
