Hopefully someone out there has some idea as to whats wrong !!!
For the last few weeks I have noticed on the odd occasion ,not all the time, that first thing in a morning there is a low end knocking/rattle noise coming from the engine of my 525i, it only seems apparent at low revs (between 1-2000rpm) then it dissapears and after a few minutes driving again it clears up.
I regularly service the car, check the levels weekly etc.. and dont seem to be using a great deal of oil, the problem is it doesnt happen all the time and when it does happen its cleared before I can get to a garage for them to listen to it
Any ideas anyone ? its a rather worrying mechanical sound and I dont want to wait for it to cause any irreversable damage
Thanks
Jordan

This sounds like a low oil problem to me, I've had other cars do this and it usually signaled to me it was time to change the oil. How long ago was the oil changed? If it's been a number of thousands of miles try adding half a quart and see if that solves it. These cars do consume some oil as most do naturally so if it's been some time since the change it could be as simple as that.

I have the same noise in the mornings only, or after it's been at rest for over 4 hours. It's a faint tapping/knocking noise that goes away after 3 minutes of operation. My car is certified, so I'll take it to a dealer next week.
