Today I removed the spare tire from my 545 to check its pressure and notices two strange electronic modules under the styrofoam tray that the spare sits on. Does anyone know what these modules are for?

I believe that this is the "brain" of Idrive. I hope I'm right, but please forgive me if I am wrong. Hopefully we'll get more answers.

Depending on your car those are the various electronic modules like PDC etc.

The smaller is the notorious MPM - Micropower Control Module. It monitors the cars power needs and allows the car to power down when a rest. The other is the parking distance controller module. Its extremely important that you keep that area dry. A dealer in San Francisco left a bottle of coolant in my car last year. After a few weeks, I started getting weird electrical problems and a dead battery every few hours. Turns out the MPM and PDC modules were damaged from coolant that leaked out of the bottle. Center BMW and BMWNA refused to cover the damage - they said since coolant destroyed the module I wasn't covered - irrespective of how the coolent got there. 1200 bucks was the quoted price to repair the modules and replace the wiring loom. I bought a new MPM for 180 bucks, dried out the PDC module, cleaned the corrosion, and replaced the modules. Still an expensive lesson and makes me cringe whenever I carry liquids in the trunk.

BMW redesigned the MPM and incorporated it into another unit for late 05 and on models. But early E60 owners should periodically inspect their spare tire wheel wells for accumulated moisture.
