on the V8s it's on the right side of the engine compartment (I'd say passenger but in the UK that would be your driver's side.) but it looks identical to the one pictured.

looks like 520d should have the reservoir in the same location. in any case, you may want to try and bleed the PS fluid or air by jacking the car up a little to take some weight off of the front wheels and then turn the wheel from lock to lock several times. add fluid as needed and see how the steering feels afterwards. if there is a leak somewhere in the system, it should feel better and then get worst again, since a leak would let air in.

My engine bay looks quite a lot different to the pictures. I know what I am looking for, its just not visible. So it must be under the engine cover as is the case here http://www.impee.co.uk/powersteering_fluid_change.htm

OK something else is strange here.
I had done a coding session on the KGM before the steering felt stiff. Then I reverted back to the default coding and the steering is fine.
So either the steering and coding issues are coincidental and my fluid is low or there is a connection.

Sounds like coding to me!
Your description of the steering sounds like what it does when the "sport" button is pressed on cars with SAT and no Active Steering.

I started noticing this on my car recently, I haven't checked power steering fluid but I know I did have to replace the seal from the cap once already.
