I posted yesterday about stiff steering, my 530d 04 has also a grinding noise and a clunk when uou pull away. It went away for a couple of weeks when they changed the steering column. Also someone posted a reply to say that his two early e60s had stiff steering and the new one doesnt.
So i think the early e60s have a major problem with the steering. The question is have the dealers been told what it is?

But my wife's X3 goes into tomorrow to have steering rack replaced, it is a known problem on e60,X3 AND X5 they try to fob you off with WD40 but problem will come back.
Push that SA to sort it!

Well, mine's had it's new steering rack today ![Smile](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/smile.gif)
Good news is that the squeak/groan/whine has gone![Smile](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/smile.gif)
Bad news is I think they replaced it with a non-servotronic rack
as at low speeds the steering is heavier than it used to be...
Still, not complaining too much - all covered under AUC warranty

got mine replaced last week too, and yes it does feel heavier at lower speeds than it used to, but I'm happy cuz that clunking noise was annoying as hell and BMW updated my i drive. I have the 04 and the i drive on those were shitty; didnt even have the function to turn off navigation voice.

When I start the car and the steering wheel moves downward to its set position, it makes a loud squeaking noise like two plastic or rubber parts are rubbing together.
If I'm driving slowly in a car park or parking in my garage, I can easily hear a whining motor or servo when I turn.

Had the same issue....a slight whirling sound as I made sharp turns at low speeds and only intermittently. I brought it up while my car was in for a regular service and I was having new tires put on as well and they said the steering rack was defective. It was binding and needed to be replaced. A thumbs up to the service dept. as well because they held off on a four wheel alignment (quoted at $310). They told me they would do it early next week, as it is a part of replacing the steering rack, so that it would be covered under warranty. Saved me 300+ dollars!
