My car is 3 years old and I noticed that same fading on the steering wheel. I used the lexol cleaner/ conditioner. It works great. It restored it like it was new. You might have to do it a few times.

My Ride: 2008 550i M-sport, retrofitted heated M-sport steering wheel with paddles, Sport-auto transmission
Default

Can't add much on the cleaning maintenance of the wheel, but if any of you having the problem has a sport or m-sport wheel: I have my original, non-heated, non-paddle m-sport wheel kicking around. It's in perfect shape as I replaced it with a heated + SAT paddle m-sport wheel in the first year of owning my 2008 550.
