With a 2004 (and I suspect over 50K miles), it's more likely a mechanical issue. I'd have a mechanic check your front bushings and control arms.

ive had this problem myself. 2005 525i. go to the dealer and tell them to apply Lubrizol. this got rid of my squeaking after many attempts. they even had the column replaced and that didnt work before. if they look at you funny BMW of Atlantic City did this for me. after the application they ran my car for like a half an hour with the hood up. this worked and havent heard it since. good luck. let me know if this works.

I have had some squeaks from my sport steering wheel and from the tiny "wood" panel left of the steering wheel.

My dealer service did fix them both and gave my a old, 1/4 full, spray bottle of "BMW Universal-glidespray".

It is a Original BMW-produce made in BMW (Schweiz) Ag.
