My Ride: 2008 Sapphire Black on Black M5 - loaded sans soft close doors
Default

A friend of mine with a 05 545 recently had his steering rack replaced. I've noticed that others here have had theirs replaced as well. I've never heard of steering racks failing so I have to think it has something to do with Active Steering. So now I'm wondering if maybe I should go with the regular steering on my 550 instead of Active Steering? Any thoughts?

PS - I notice the M5 does not have Active Steering either?

Cars without AS have also been affected, so I don't think that is the problem.

The only steering racks that I know of that have been replaced (and I know of quite a few) have all been with 545i's or 645i's and therefore all had Active Steering.

Mine is a 525i without AS.

Less than a month (or 1000km old), there's a noise when I turn the steering wheel counterclockwise.

Dropped it off this Monday, they replaced the steering wheel, doesn't help. Then then replace the steering column, doesn't help either.

They told me BMW Canada is sending someone there the coming Monday to determine what the problem is.
