Saturday evening I was in New Haven for the re-opening of the Yale Art Gallery. (which is a must see!) I was making a left turn and my steering completely cut out. I have never had anything remotely like this happen to me with all my years of driving. I can only imagine driving on rte. 95 at 70+ and the steering shuts off. Quite a scary thought.
Any comments out there?
Best wishes for the holidays and be safe.

I hope some of you reply to my question. I really need to have some advice in this matter. Also, I tend to doubt that
I am the only one out there who has experienced this problem.

Hi,

Are you saying you cannot steer the car at all? or your active steering stopped functioning? or you feel like your driving a non powersteering car?

Thanks, BimmeRC. The steering instantly felt like a ton of weight was needed to move the wheel. Even more intense than the power steering going off. I turned off the the ignition, started it up again and the steering was normal. It still gave me pause to think that if this ever happens again I might not be in such easy position to navigate my response to the situation.

Hmm, that is weird. I have never experienced that with mine before. Have you told your dealer about this? You might want to consider bringing it in for service.

I have not told the dealer as yet. My vehicle is an early production model. It has only 18,000 miles, but I think I do not want to due deal with issues anymore. It just might be time to kiss this one good-bye.

I remember I had this once in my old car. The steering got REALLY heavy, but it was in a parlking lot at low speed. Never happened again. In my new car, the steering is very heavy if I start the engine and drive off immediately. It takes ~1-2 secons for the power steering support to kick in.

To drjochen:
It sounds like we had something similar in our vehicles. My issue was also at low speed, but I don't think I trust the darn thing anymore.

To Arcleid:
I will definitely drive a 550 first and then decide. I've always had a BMW and probably will not change now.
I am willing to believe that all the bugs in the vehicle have been exterminated by now.

Sounds like it. Only happened once and then never again. Mine was also a 2004 with A/S.
