Steering Lock Warning Light
I have a 2007 550i, pre LCI, 83k miles. I've owned the car for two years with very few problems. Just normal maint and a small water leak from one of the radiator hoses.
Last week I pulled into a parking spot, turned the car off and a red warning light appeared letting me know there's an error with my steering lock. The lcd screen read the following, "Electric Steering Wheel Lock. Steering wheel lock will not be disabled after turning off the engine. The engine may not restart."
Needless to say I was alarmed. I turned the engine off and restarted the car several times with success. I've driven around for the past week with no issues whatsoever except the warning light will not go away. I understand the lock is integral to the steering column and the typical fix is to either replace the column or somehow shear the bolts off the locking mechanism and replace the defective part.
I would like to just clear the codes first before going to the trouble and expense of replacing parts. A112 and A116 were the two that my local indie mechanic read. He was unable to clear the codes during my visit. What needs to be done to clear them?
