Sorry, the picture did not upload. The dealer gave me a Valvoline DEX/MERC Automatic Transmission Fluid but in the reservoir it says use CHF 11S oil only. Is this the correct fluid? Thanks!

DO NOT pour that trans fluid in that PS reservoir.
If the reservoir says CHF 11S, then you MUST use that. Return that trans fluid and get a liter of CHF 11S.

Typically, parts guys ask what's written on the reservoir cap because some cars use trans fluid while others use CHF 11S.

older bmw's used transmission fluid for the power steering systems, but not on the e60.

+1000 Especially E60s with adaptive steering and dynamic handling - which your 545 sport probably has. Listen to what PCY said, get the correct oil and be happier.

I am not sure if every e60 uses hydronic fluid for power steering system like CHF 11S but it should be written on power steering reservoir. I have active steering and my PS reservoir has CHF 11S written on it.
Like others members say check you PS reservoir and make sure before you put anything in there. It so easy.

You can get CHF11S at NAPA for a lot less money then the BMW dealer will charge you.

Do you messure the power steering fluid with the car running or with the car off? Mine is low with the car off so i was going to add some if this is the correct method.

You don't measure if the car is running or not. You measure based on if the fluid is hot or cold. I believe there are markings depending on the fluid temperature.
