Has anyone noticed a "clunk" in the stearing. Especially at low speed (i.e. parking) and more so when cold.

The dealer has said it's normal but several people (4 or 5) have commented.

Is this a common thing?

Cheers

Baron,
When I test drove 2 different cars last may one with Sport Option one without. I noticed a slight clunking noise when I was turning the wheel. It did not matter if the car was in motion of standing still. I asked the salesman and one of the Tech guys. They both said (at different times) it had to do with the Active Stearing. The Non-Sport stearing did not make the noise at all. So...

Sounds like a service call then. Maybe a few of the other folks have some knowledge on this issue. Sorry I could not help more.

I know the E39 5-series and to some extent the current X5's still have the odd steering "clunk" caused by pressure release in the power steering pipes. seemed to effect some cars and not others.

I think on the E39 BMW fixed it eventually by using larger diameter pipes. to be honest it was not really a fix as it would not really cause a problem/damage. BMW most likely just did it to stop people bringing their cars in

be suprised if the E60 has got same issue, get it checked to confirm.

That's interesting. I never had that particular problem in my E39 but the tech who drove the E60 today mentioned the behaviour when cold would probably be because of the fluid being thicker.

They're going to dig around and see if anything has been published.

yeah I think thats the case most time when you hear tech's say "affects some cars not others" i always translate that to mean "only affects the cars of people who listen for those type of things" i.e most of us on here I think they are known as car obsessives

still be interested to hear if your tech guys find anything, keep us posted

I have the clunk in my steering.
When the car was new it happened all the time when i was parking but now it seems that the clunk ins't present all the time.
I have sport suspension but no active steering....

Bit of an update.

The dealer is going to try a BMW fix that's (and i quote) "a bit experimental with some special order lubricant".

I guess i'll find out on Monday.
