Static when playing CDs

I now get static noise whenever I use the CD player. The noise starts after maybe an hour and starts softly but builds up and starts getting louder.
Anyone experience this and had it fixed? It used to happen only occasionally but now it happens everytime I drive. This morning I drove from MA to NJ and about halfway down in CT I had to turn off the CD player because I couldn't stand the static noise anymore!
