Start Up Rattle (inside) 535xi N54
All,
I've tried to capture the sounds with my phone. One is a rattle that happens at start up. Its a short rattle sound that goes away immediately after start up.
Second is the sound while driving. At low speeds and slight acceleration you can hear a bit of a burble or diesel engine type sound. Listen carefully at the end of every gas pedal press.
Hopefully you are able to hear both issues.
Thanks

Same exact rattle sound from start up and while driving. After doing my own research I found out it was my wastegate actuator that rattles. Lucky me I only had 80k miles so I brought to bmw and they replaced both my turbos under manufacture warranty.

I agree though - it sounds like a waste-gate rattling issue. Read over this thread for a little more info on how to DIY that issue: Partial wastegate rattle fix
Yours sounds like a partial rattle as well so just hope its on the aft turbo!

I also got a couple under my CPO warranty, but I believe the turbos have an extended warranty of 8 years/82,000 miles or something like that. My understanding is that the wategates are part of the whole assembly and that's why they change everything out.
WOW? They gave you 2 new turbos for the wastegate rattle? I would be ecstatic if I had a rattle while mine was under warranty and got 2 brand new turbos for it!

That's very honorable of BMW if they are willing to replace the turbos for the waste-gate issue. Since you have the CPO though BMW may have noticed another issue and opted to replace the turbos while the engine was going to be taken apart anyways.

Actually, I was in there for regular service and I mentioned the rattle and the service manager basically said "Ok, guess you're getting some new turbos" as he said that is the ultimate fix.
Yes, you are correct on that. Sorry, I forgot to mention that warranty! It's an 8 year/82,000 mile warranty for ANY waste-gate issues with the turbo's. I don't believe the turbo's themselves have the warranty, but the waste-gate itself is covered.

I wonder which dealer in chicago will be nice enough to do that for me. I went to one and the service advisor acknowledged the noise at startup but he said they require codes to show up for them to replace turbos or for functional failure, loud clanking etc. Said they'll keep the car for a day to figure out where the noise is coming from and atleast charge me 2 hrs of labor to do all tests...
I'll try a different dealer first..

No codes needed when I brought my car in. They diagnosed my car about the rattle and sure enough it was the wastegate unfortunately they can't replace just the wastegate since it was built in to the turbos. Go check with other bmw dealer/shop. Your local bmw is giving You BS!
