Has anyone experienced a scrapping sound when going over a speed bump on their cars? You can feel it through the steering wheel too. Sounds like the wheel touching the wheel arches but don't think its that though. It doesn't happen all the time.

I've had it too in very cold conditions with a cold engine. In my case it wasn't the steeringwheel but the shockabsorbers whome were very cold and making scraping noises.

Dealer told me that it was annoying indeed but that replacing them with new ones wouldn't help.

As soon as the car gets warm it goes away in my case so I learned to live with it.

I have noticed it a couple of times. It depends on the shape of the speed bump and the velocity I take it at (I think). My recollection is that it occurs over the longer-flatter speed bumps when I don't slow down so much. My 3-series made exactly the same noise so I thought it was normal but I don't know whether its the shocks or what. The 5-series is definitely not as frequent. I think I started to notice it after they put salt on our roads a few weeks back so it might be a corrosion thing.

At least I'm not the only one. Its just feels like something is grinding against the wheels or steering column. Very strange. It does seem dependent on the type of speed bump and speed.

Will get it checked out when I'm next in the dealer which would probably be for the oil service.

Yes, me too! Exactly as you described. The speed bumps are only a 1/4 mile from my house so the cold shock absorber theory could be spot on!

Interesting to see that we all seem to have the sports suspension too. Maybe this is the common factor???
