I have been a very good boy during break-in. I am at 1100 miles today. One thing that I just noticed THAT I HATE, is if your in manual/sport mode and you floor the car it downshifts itself instead of holding the gear. BAD! I can downshift if I want. I previously had a SMG so I might be very critical here but BMW please make a software update for us SA customers so that the car only shifts when we shift it and I will be very happy. I bought the sport auto because it was different from the Steptronic.
When I floored it in 6th and the car downshifted itself I almost became a very expensive suppository into a Jeep Commander.

It happens to me on the rare occasion that I have the SMG in Auto mode.

Hi!

Sport mode is supposed to put you in the fastest gear possible, which is in this case a downshift. I think its great! It feels good and puts a kick in your back.

If you dont want it to downshift, then simply keep it in normal Drive !!

Ronald
In the US in normal drive it downshifts automatically too. The SMG would downshift itself in normal drive mode but would not in manual mode which is what I was looking for.

I understand the fustration with a transmission that shifts when it wants to even when you're in manual mode...but if you floored it, why wouldn't you want to downshift too?

Also, Did it only down shift 1 gear to 5th? I find if I'm cruising in 6th with SMG, I gotta drop down to 4th if I want any real excelleration.

Are you depressing the accelerator to the poiint where the kickdown switch engages? I would think it would not downshift automatically unless you did that. On my 545 Step it does not downshift in manual unless you push the acclerator far enough down to "click" the kickdown button. I believe that WOT is sitll given even though I have not engaged kickdown.

It went from 6th to 3rd, the redline on the turbo six is higher than the V8. I thought that they were trying to mimic the SMG with the Sports Auto. It is not a defect, I just would rather control shifting myself.

Fair point, I do have that button too. The SMG's and Sport Auto's are newer concepts and what is considered desirable or beneficial by the consumer is still being decided upon by the manufacturers.

It was dramatic and it functioned very efficiently as it was programmed. Since the turbos do not have any lag it really took off much faster than I was expecting. Wait...maybe I do like this
Being a former SMG guy, I would just rather shift myself; at least in the manual/sport mode.
