This morning, while backing up, I happened to turn around and catch a glimpse of my speedometer. I was registering about 7 mph...in Reverse. That's a new one on me; heck I remember the days when used car dealers could hook a counter-clockwise motor up to speedo head and run it backwards over the weekend and have a near-new car Monday morning.

Anyone want to try a new twist on the quarter mile?

Cheers,
Ray Hull

A couple of years ago we had a champ at speeding in reverse. A search may turn up the post.

I went back and checked the post. The champ is rollee:

I noticed it too from the corner of my eye on the HUD.

I don't know my E39 did that but I don't normally look at the cluster when backing up.

Anyone watch the most recent 5th Gear shootout? Tiff Needle Hot Lapped 2 cars in reverse! Toped out at about 41mph the whole time!

Great idea Ray. Next time out with my Pro RR I'm going to try for the quickest 0-20 or 0-30 for a 5er in reverse. I'll adjust for weather and altitude, of course.

Gears are cut for forward movement. I wouldn't want to hammer mine in reverse too much. I would hate to do damage to the diff. Not to mention... I don't like the idea of a FWD BMW with rear wheel steering.

You do have a point. I wasn't going to hammer, but maybe I'll just go for the 0-10 record.
