At first I thought you were talking about the speed limit set up through idrive, and mine just blinks to tell me I'm going over about 85 to 90, only hit that on the interstate. As for the electronically limited top speed I believe this provision in the vehicle?s engine management computer prevents the driver from exceeding a preset speed, typically by deactivating the spark or fuel injectors.

Remapped ECU or chip to fix this "problem".

I can tell that driving at those speeds really puts a smile on your face.

SWWWWWEEEEETTTT !!! as I know it feels great. Did a Brussels -> Berlin run in 5hrs 5mins (traffic in Cologne and Hanover) and pulled 250Km/h for a while. My passenger had no clue we were cruising that fast as the car is just so solid. Look at MERV's revs, 3500?! and topped out. WHAT A CAR!!!!

What's the difference bewtween common rail and pumpnozzles?
Any info is appreciated! how can u tell if an engine is one or the other?
bmw uses ?

Most current (read recent and high tech) passenger diesel cars use a common rail injection system. A common rail system has a high pressure fuel pump that supplies fuel to the fuel rail or pipes, which in turn provide fuel to all the injectors at the same time. Typical fuel rail pressures are in the 14,000 to 16,000 PSI at idle and go over 20,000 PSI under heavy load conditions. The comon-rail technology, I believe, was originally developed by FIAT in Italy during the 1980's. When '90's technology allowed them to overcome technical obstacles, it became more widespread. And licensed to other manufacturers.

The VW group developed and use their own 'Pumpe Duse' technology.

Volkswagen's Pumpe Duse or pump injectors also use a computer controlled solenoid to control injector opening and duration but there the similarity stops. Instead of one high pressure pump for the fuel system, each Pumpe Duse injector is its own high pressure pump.

One of the advantages the Pumpe Duse injection system has is the high pressure it operates at. It can operate at up to 30,000 PSI injection pressure as it only has to deal with each injector separately rather than over a longer 'common-rail'. This in theory provides finer atomisation of the fuel for high torque and power with low emissions and high fuel efficiency.

So, if u are driving anything from the VW camp (VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat/Have I left anything out) it'll be a PD system. Otherwise, I'd be 99.99% sure it will be common rail. Most of the automotive world seems to have joined the 'common-rail' camp, including BMW. Why? Not sure. Maybe licensing issues from VW.

[quote name='skaffa' date='Oct 6 2005, 08:45 PM']This is AFAIK:

In diesel electronics stop giving more fuel to the cylinder. In common rail and pumpnozzles system most probably shortening nozzle opening time. In old systems decreasing pump capacity.

In petrol either turning ignition later or just easing "pedal" in "fly by wire" systems.

If anyone know for sure, please tell us!

BMW use common rail and VW use "pumpduse". Outside of the car it's almost impossible to say which is which. Common rail should be more quiet. Common rail nozzle is smaller.

Other things IrishEyes explaned better.

Yep! I got it! Thanx IrishEyes and skaffa!

Does any body know if the 110hp TDI engine has PD? Someone told me that the TDI 110bhp doesn't have it and only the 115HP upword engines have it!

Hi

Does anyone know the MPH per thousand revs in the gearing for the 535D as that may well answer why the limiter did not kick in as the car was not doing 155mph.
When we tested the cars with a prolaser the speedo was maybe 10% optimistic.

Cheers
