On a recent trip to Germany managed 157mph on an autobahn and felt the speed retarding. Just wondered how the limiter works? Anyone know.

BTW for those who haven't driven at thse sort of speeds its a must do experience in an E60 as the car is steady as a rock!

This is AFAIK:

In diesel electronics stop giving more fuel to the cylinder. In common rail and pumpnozzles system most probably shortening nozzle opening time. In old systems decreasing pump capacity.

In petrol either turning ignition later or just easing "pedal" in "fly by wire" systems.

If anyone know for sure, please tell us!

157 mph

So what's that in km/h? I once drove this rental Pontiac Grand Am and the system kicks in at 160 km/h, that sucks.

Yesterday i speed a little and the speedometer reached a little more than 260 km/h (4400 rpm).
I was side by side with an SL 600 (previous model) for 2/3 kms....
Most of the time the speed limiter will start at 250 km/h but not this time.
