IIRC, there were a number of posts last year that said BMW trade-marked the 560i nomenclature...any more news about the possible appearance of a 5er with this moniker. I think I could live with a V-12 E60...sound good to anyone else???

I think BMW's product strategy might frown upon a V10 5 liter M5 and then a 'regular' 5 series with a 6 liter V12. I don't remember a time when any standard series model had a larger motor than that same line's M model .

with the arrival of the e90 335i-the inline 6 goes to 335hp-more than the current M3....the V-12 is 444hp-so it does not outpower the M5.
A V-12 powered 5 series just extends the large motor in a mid-size sedan concept. Sorta like the old V-12 powered Jag-u-are saloons of the '60s.
Also the e39 M5 is history now so 444hp in the e60 is not stepping on the "old" M5....just a little fantasy thinkin!

No 580 for BMW. DAIMLERCHRYSLER already registered R 580 as a trademark in the US and Germany. 560 is as high as BMW's trademarks go.

well it was ment in an ironic way... I think that 550i is enough for the standard 5 series... it has to stop at some point... if you want more, then go for the M5.

FYI, MB does it with AMG though...like before the SL65 came out they had the SL55 and SL600.

I agree!
Although i really think that anyone that aims for the 550i (if money wouldn't be much of a problem) should aim for the m5.

Unfortuately, for most of us, money is always a problem. That is why I am going to work today. The M5 is significantly more money than the 550 - at least $20,000 comparably equipped. There is also the issue of the M5 having a touring range which is 200 plus miles, which I would find annoying. And the insurance issue. My 2006 550 is 40% less than my previous 03 M3 as far as insurance costs. Granted, this is because I have two teenage daughters on my policy, but the insurance companies, in general, are not that fond of the M badge. The 550 has near M car performance, but hovers under the radar.
