Speaker above Brake pedal?

My Ride: 2007 Sapphire Black Metallic 525i. Beige Dakota Leather, Premium package, bluetooth, BMW Assist, Xenon adaptive lights, Sirius radio
I was installing my new mats and happened to look up under the area above the brake pedal and accelerator. There appears to be a speaker there. Is it functional? What is it for?
