That is your conclusion from that guy's moronic statement?!?! Wow...
I honestly don't have an opinion regarding which car is the better value, but I do wonder if the differences have to do with more than just the engines. A long time ago in a coversation with a sales guy at my dealer's he said that there was more than just the engine difference to consider when comparing a 540 to a 530. Sound deadening was one item I recall. Included features vs. options was another. There may be others. Has anyone ever done a feature to feature comparison of a 550 to a 535 with equivalent options? Is there anything else that a 550 has that you simply can't get or have to pay extra fo on a 535?

According to this thread Chipped 535 vs 550, a 535i with a chip modification will beat out a 550i up to 100mph. Big deal, so will a lot of cars. All it takes is money. I don't know why there is such a big deal made about the 535i vs 550i - the mine is bigger than yours syndrome. Grow up. They are both great cars that appeal to different people. If everyone liked the same thing it would be a pretty boring world.

For US market only.
550i only options:
- carbon black
- M-kit (you can do aftermarket on 535i but cost more unless you can unload the original bumpers etc)
- suspension is different (one cautions not clear if 550i has higher rate spring and struts only but geometry like control arms etc are the same. Still waiting for realoem.com to have part list so I can confirm. IMHO, it's not a big deal to have stiffer spring/struts as long the geometry is the same).
- 4.8 V8 engine of course
- non-RFT with 19' wheel that come with sport package.
- transmission is the other one that I can't find any info (especially on sport-auto-trans, need realoem to post the part list for both 535i and 550i).

Else you can get the same options on 535i (as long you are willing to pay for them).

So really, the carbon black paint and V8 engine is really exclusive to 550i. If you want a very capable car on day1, get 550i no brainer.
I almost got a 550i cause of the carbon-black but I really like the I6 TT engine and it edge the color for me a little bit.
The strange thing, in Canada you can get both the M-kit and carbon black paint as options on 535i, go figure???

I just hope people wouldn't plan to go over this speed on freeway often. In most states if you clocked at triple digit speed it's mandatory 1 night jail time to sober up. So to be able to pass another car only when you are reaching 150MPH is rather silly point.

Gentlemen,
Lets not confuse things- 535 v 550 debate yes valid. A "chipped" 535 will never have the 550 pass it, even over 155mph.
The "chip" in this link, http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=257899 is either a $179 or $349 plug in device that
supposedly increases boost to 11psi in the $379 version, the stock car is at 8.5psi. The Dinan goes up to 13.5psi.
For the price, the juicebox gives some extra power for very little money.
