I was washing My car the other day and observed something after cleaning the grill with finer detail.

I could not see the radiator through the kidney grill. It has a closed slatted set-up that obviously opens at a certain speed.

You may think it boring or you may not even think about it at all, I personaly think its brilliant.

Cheers.

They're only on certain cars in certain countries:

I have the grill "air-stoppers" in my car, as do the LCI's.
At least the here in E60, since they are a part of the Efficent Dynamics theme.

I have seen a lot of E60 not having them before LCI.

Mine doesn't have them!

...and your car is a MY 0?, built?

I think you'll see many cars in Finland have the slats but I think we established a while ago that they only include them on cars destined for countries with colder overall climates...

I have taken this info from http://wds.west.lv/release/en/zinfo/...214_ms45kj.htm which I understand 'wds' is something to do with the car's electrics (I also notice that I cannot access this link again...?). Wish I could since there is some useful stuff there.

The radiator shutter seals off the engine from the outside and directs cooling air under the vehicle - see the attached for more info.

Wrong! My LCI does not have them. My pre-LCI had them.

I would question that. I received my LCI 525dT in June. Just this week I noticed that I couldn't see the radiator through the grill when the car was parked. I'm sure that I did see the radiator before. I took a closer look and found the slats covering the radiator. The weather is getting colder here now and it seems that the car parks with the slats closed but didn't do so during the summer.

If the document posted above is accurate, the slats should not be closed with the ignition off -- regardless of temperature. The only thing that isn't explained is whether or not they may stay closed until the car goes to sleep...
