Default someone side swipped my mirror!

well, i was at home relaxing when i heard a car drive by followed by a "clunk!" i immediately knew someone hit my car, so i run outside hoping i can catch whoever did it, but they were long gone, and i see my side mirror dangling

looks like i will need a new side mirror assembly, as well as a new mirror, the rear cover luckly was saved...which i found like 10 feet away from my car!!!

anyone know if i can simply purchase the frame of the mirror assembly like the photo below?? is it hard to replace? that seems to be the only thing broken along with a replacement mirror. i snapped the mirror glass back in and it moves just fine. i wouldn't mind loosing the heated/dimming option and just opting for a regular mirror in the meantime if its cheaper. any suggestions????

this is the 2nd time in less than a few months someone "hit and ran" my car. luckily, the damage isnt major again. but still, wtf! their are NO cars parked near my car, and PLENTY of room to drive safely away from my car. the other side of the street was empty!! imagine had they side swipped my car and took off...anyways, m5 mirrors have been in the mind lately, but my budget just does not make that possible right now.

The colour of your mirrors must make people treat them as targets. Sorry couldn't resist.

I do feel your pain and these mirrors aren't cheap plus getting them to them is quite an effort.

i was able to find a housing pretty cheap that im going to replace on mine, looks like i should be able to do it without removing the whole assembly. now i just have to wait until i find a good deal on a mirror glass on ebay. im meantime im going to use a temp cut-yourself plastic mirror over the glass...should get me by while i find a good deal.

Someone 'side swiped' my mirror in San Francisco last year, but it was odd because the actual mirror housing was intact, just pushed forward, but the actual mirror class was basically ripped off, shattered, and on the street. I was so pissed. It seemed that someone must have punched in the middle of the mirror or something, cause I feel that if someone hit the housing that hard, the whole assembly would have fallen off.

Keep in mind this was at a stealership, I got just the glass, installed out the door for $300... unfortunately it was more expensive because of the heating and the dimming, which I assume yours has too. The SA said that if it had been the housing around the mirror, I would have had to buy an entire assembly. Of course, that was directly from BMW, so if you look around I'm sure you'll be able to find just the pieces that you need at a more reasonable price.

Best of luck!
