Anyone know what this solar coating is on a windshield. Do 545's normally come with the solar coating?

Is it the stuff that makes some MB S Class' and CL CLass' windshields have a purple color?

I believe so. My windshield does not appear to have the purpleish color, but I was told that it is solar coated glass. It's made by Splintex. Is that what you have?

Hmm, I'm not aware of any solar coating on my windshield....
Who told you about it? Is it documented in the manual?

I've been wondering about the appearance of the new S class MBs and why it appears that they do not have a tint to their glass. I don't know anything about this product/process but would speculate that it would interfere with radar and laser detection.... But then, how many S class drivers worry about that?

Ours are still "clearly" green. :geek:

The whole thing started when I got a crack in my windshield. The place I took it to wants to order the glass but asked me which options I had on the glass, i.e rain sensor, solar coating, etc... I didn't know about the solar coating so I inquired at the dealer about the windshield and not only did they not know what options I have on my windshield but they have never heard of solar coating as well, so I decided to do some research. The glass is made by Splintex. After some checking up on Splintex, it appears that a huge percentage of the auto glass that they make is solar coated, so I am assuming that I have it in the windshield, What the solar coating does is reduce UV and infrared exposure, so the car does not get as warm on the inside in the summer. Now I'm trying to figure out whether I need the solar coating or not. Funny that the BMW dealer has never heard of it.

Yes I believe the glass is special if you have HUD

I belive the "solar glass" is an option outside the US. In the US we only get the very slight tint.
