From time to time software updates are mentioned in various posts on this forum. Questions:
1. Are the updates to the iDrive software only?
2. How does one determine the version of the software on an E60?
3. How often are software updates issued?
4. Since presumably the dealer is the one who installs the updates, how are owners notified when updates are issued?
5. Is the software updated when routine service is performed? If so, is the owner advised of the update?
I've owned my E60 for 16 months. It has had one recall that involved a software update regarding emissions. The service technician told me the software on my E60 was also updated when the Sirius Satellite Radio module was installed in June of last year. I'm not aware of any other software updates.
My E60 has required almost no service. It's had one oil change since I've owned it. The only warranty item to date has been replacement of a broken cupholder. So, there haven't been many opportunities for software updates at the dealer.

1) No, all car systems recieve updates at various times
2) ask dealer what they loaded, or to check what the car has on it
3) Every couple of months
4) You have to ask here or at the dealer
5) Depends how long the update will take, sometimes the car has to stay for a day or 2, dealer will inform you how long it should take. best way to get it is to ask for new software to be loaded after you hear about it here
