Long Story Short....Shortish
Parked car Friday night, all fine. Saturday went to start car iDrive warning regarding lighting systems: check indictors, side lights, dipped beam, full beam.
Performed soft reset (sat nav pro), no change. Checked fuses, all OK.
Called BMW assistance; helpful lady took details and arranged for an engineer to come out to vehicle. 40 minutes later (pretty good considering there are only two working for the whole of Scotland!- which is a bit worrying), guy turns up and tells me that this is a new known fault with the coding, which is causing a problem with the lighting module,(My car was re-programmed in Jan '06 CIP 20.0 (I think) because the last one CIP 17.? had stopped the yellow eyebrow lights working). The solution, for the time being, is to do a full reset to clear the fault. Once done all seems to be well. Good service, nice guy.
He informs me that this is only temporary and it could last a day or two weeks, but that the only permanent solution is a full dealer re-code.
Apparently he has already had to do this to a 7 series as well.
Oh what great fun off to the dealer again.
Watch Out it could be you next!

The simple answer is the had to remove the battery supply for a short time, then reconnect. Then he used his BMW tablet (laptop) to do the diagnostic check.

I couldn't say whether removing the battery supply alone, would have provided a short term solution.
