cmansbimmer,
Summer tires in the snow! Really!?
Just FYI - I run 18" Blizzaks on my xi, and I can gun it at the stoplight (traction light will come on if I gun it enough) and climb the VERY steep hills in to my neighborhood (even stopping halfway up). Last winter, these tires got me DOWN the hills out of my neighborhood in the ICE.
I ran the Dunlop M3's on my '99 528 (RWD) and could not get up the hill in to my neighborhood in 4" of fresh snow with a 25mph running start (that's why I got the xi).
I'm not saying one tire is better, but ANY winter tire is going to be better than summer tires. 18" work fine for me, but I've only been driving through 8"-10" of snow (and the ice).
Got those springs installed yet?

The Blizzaks are the way to go for the winter. I haven't had a problem yet and I don't have an xi. However, your senses should be your guide. Any vehicle can get stuck, so don't beat yourself up. Make sure the Blizzaks you get are 18s, you can always go to 19s for the summer. Costco sells them the cheapest. Good luck.

225/55R16 is as narrow you can go. That's what the car is typed for. Else it will affect your insurance and etc.
Yes, you have to be within the circle dimension so that the speedometer doen't show wrong speed and you also have to make sure that they fit and that the clearance inside the wheelhouse is ok. But other than that...?
I know the EU directive but it seems to be floating when it comes to practice? Do you know anyone who have got fines because of wrong tiresize, while still following the recommendations from VV? I haven't!
I asked specifically at Bilprovningen about this and they said that they won't check the tiresize, the police should, but the police thinks this is a case for Bilprovningen so the won't check either...
L?s l?ngst ner p? sidan in denna l?nk: http://www.vv.se/templates/page3____8437.aspx
VV verkar l?mna r?tt ?ppet n?r det g?ller d?ckdimensioner...

Well, the Blizzaks arrived today. I gotta say that TireRack is just awesome. I placed the order yesterday at noon and they arrived today, via UPS ground no less! Plus, it was only $30 for shipping and of course, no tax. Going to one of the shops that TireRack recommends. Then I'm off to a local mall parking light tonight to play around and see what this car is all about in the snow.

Go for it cman!! I have the M3s on my ride and have no issues here in western PA. I tried one day ages ago with the summers and nearly put her in the ditch a number of times. Quickly got on to TireRack (concur that they are very good) and have since had zero issues with gaining and maintaining grip. I am sure the Blizzacks will do well also.
On a side note....got the LandRover LR3 stuck the other night! And my rescue (H2 and Dodge 250) got stuck trying to pull me out!! DOH! Finally got all three out after about 2 and a half hours of digging and pulling. I know I know.... Had to tell someone.....

I have the Dunlop RFT M3s on my 550i and finally tested its superiority yesterday in Boston's snow/ice/sleet condition. I have to say that I was damned impressed that i felt the drive to be safe and controlled. In addition, I drive these tires at 110 mph on clear days with no problem due to its high performance rating

Fantastic. This is what I love to hear. And the best part is, you guys all have RWD cars and are getting good traction. I can't wait to test it out on my car now.
