I don't know how bad the scratch is. If it isn't too bad, you might want to try and make a copy of the scratched disc in your computer. The computer DVD drive is likely more sensitive than the car's DVD drive. That is because the computer DVD is spec'ed to read all the various rewritable formats.

would it be advisable to have the disc "resurfaced" after attempting to make a copy? just a thought...

What I have done before for discs in trouble is wash them with some Dawn or other dish soap and dry them off. Then just give it a try to make a copy. If there is a gouge as opposed to a small scratch, you are probably out of luck. If the first copy doesn't work, then maybe doing some buffing of the scratch can help, but I think it is less likely. I've not looked, but maybe there are kits to restore CDs. They probably include some fillers that are the same index of refraction as the disc polycarbonate.
